Five TPC Members Visit STF Secretariat

0

Taekwondo Peace Corps (TPC) was launched by the World Taekwondo Federation on 5 July 2008 in Suwon, South Korea on July 5, 2008. Since then, taekwondo coaches had been dispatched to various countries annually to promote peace through taekwondo.

To date, Singapore had hosted a total of 4 groups of TPC members over 4 consecutive years.

Last year, one of them, Choi Daeho was in the news when he demonstrated the spirit of taekwondo by giving his slippers to an old lady, on a bus, without any footwear. His kind act was covered in various print and broadcast media.

Daeho proved to be as kind as he was skilful as a coach. In view of his coaching ability, the Singapore Taekwondo Federation (STF) brought him back to guide its elite kyorugi athletes.

This year five members were sent to Singapore. Only two of them – Lee Sung Jae and Jang Hee Jae – would be attached to the national squad as sparring partners for about a month and a half.

All five of them paid a courtesy visit to the STF Secretariat on 7 January 2014. They were briefed on the status of taekwondo in Singapore and were evidently impressed with the large following and the profile of the organization.

Lesser Known Clubs Shine

The Demonstration Tournament held on 29 December at Toa Payoh Sports Hall gave participants the opportunity to
prove that they could jump higher or farther, break more concretes or boards and be more creative and stylish in the multifarious events.

The competition, which was the second in the series, saw many new records broken and many new champions.  There were also some champions, including Baek Moo Jin, Kang rui Jie and Song Jeong Ho – who successfully defended their crowns.

What’s more, the tournament also put some lesser known clubs – for example Bristish Club, Top Taekwondo and Ildo Taekwondo – in the limelight.  It showed, among other things, that every club had the ability to produce champions and not the preserve of the top clubs.

The tournament results are attached.

Youth Leadership Camp

0

The United Nation Office of Sport on Development and Peace (UNOSDP) will be organizing a Youth Leadership Camp from 10 to 20 July 2014 in Gwangju, Republic of Korea.

We have received an invitation from World Taekwondo Federation today for nominations of participants between the ages of 18 to 25 years.

The purpose of the camp is to bring together youth who have the potential to be community leaders in the field of sport for development. The camp will be both, theoretical and practical in nature and provide participants with a toolkit on how sport can be best used to improve the social conditions in the participant’s home communities.

However, each nominee MUST meet the following criteria.

  • The participants should be from the age of 18-25.
  • They should be currently volunteering or working in the sport for development field and involved with community programmes.
  • The participant should have a leadership role within their sport for development organization.
  • Since one of the objectives of the camp is to share best practices and experiences from the field, UNOSDP is looking for young people with great social skills who would be ready to present and share their work in public.
  • Most importantly UNOSDP is looking for participants who are motivated and dedicated to work in the field of sport for development and peace, bringing innovative ideas into their programmes and to this field.
  • Since the official language of the camps is English, it is essential that the candidate has excellent conversational skills in English.
  • There is strength in diversity and therefore we encourage persons with disabilities, people from different cultural backgrounds, with different experiences to come together to teach each other and to learn from one another.

All costs for the participants will be covered. NOTE: This does not include getting to and from airports in the home countries of the participants or the cost of the VISA application process.

Your nomination must be submitted to the STF by Wednesday 11 December 2013 by 12 noon.
