Lesser Known Clubs Shine

0

The Demonstration Tournament held on 29 December at Toa Payoh Sports Hall gave participants the opportunity to
prove that they could jump higher or farther, break more concretes or boards and be more creative and stylish in the multifarious events.

The competition, which was the second in the series, saw many new records broken and many new champions.  There were also some champions, including Baek Moo Jin, Kang rui Jie and Song Jeong Ho – who successfully defended their crowns.

What’s more, the tournament also put some lesser known clubs – for example Bristish Club, Top Taekwondo and Ildo Taekwondo – in the limelight.  It showed, among other things, that every club had the ability to produce champions and not the preserve of the top clubs.

The tournament results are attached.

Youth Leadership Camp

0

The United Nation Office of Sport on Development and Peace (UNOSDP) will be organizing a Youth Leadership Camp from 10 to 20 July 2014 in Gwangju, Republic of Korea.

We have received an invitation from World Taekwondo Federation today for nominations of participants between the ages of 18 to 25 years.

The purpose of the camp is to bring together youth who have the potential to be community leaders in the field of sport for development. The camp will be both, theoretical and practical in nature and provide participants with a toolkit on how sport can be best used to improve the social conditions in the participant’s home communities.

However, each nominee MUST meet the following criteria.

  • The participants should be from the age of 18-25.
  • They should be currently volunteering or working in the sport for development field and involved with community programmes.
  • The participant should have a leadership role within their sport for development organization.
  • Since one of the objectives of the camp is to share best practices and experiences from the field, UNOSDP is looking for young people with great social skills who would be ready to present and share their work in public.
  • Most importantly UNOSDP is looking for participants who are motivated and dedicated to work in the field of sport for development and peace, bringing innovative ideas into their programmes and to this field.
  • Since the official language of the camps is English, it is essential that the candidate has excellent conversational skills in English.
  • There is strength in diversity and therefore we encourage persons with disabilities, people from different cultural backgrounds, with different experiences to come together to teach each other and to learn from one another.

All costs for the participants will be covered. NOTE: This does not include getting to and from airports in the home countries of the participants or the cost of the VISA application process.

Your nomination must be submitted to the STF by Wednesday 11 December 2013 by 12 noon.

Creditable Performance by Raiders

0

Raiders Taekwondo led by coaches, Mr Polo Teo and Ms Koh Poh Ling, fielded 2 players for the 3rd USM-Kelantan International Open Taekwondo 2013 held on 14 to 16 November 2013 in Kelantan Malaysia. They were 10-year old Joshiah Tan and 14-year old Jaden Lim. The team was supported by Mr Alan Lim and Ms Ang Leng Kee.

Here is a brief report from Ms Koh:

“Raiders decided to participate in the event to provide exposure for two of our most promising players. And we were glad we did.

It was an eye opener for them.   They impressed with the speed and strength of the other players. Nevertheless, they were not overwhelmed.

Joshiah fought his way to a bronze medal in the under 28kg category for 10-13 years old. He earned a place in the semi-finals by beating his aggressive opponent 4-1. His progress to the final was stopped by an experienced opponent who capitalized on Joshiah’s unfamiliarity with the head kick rule.

Our other player, Jaden, also gave of his best. However, it was not enough for him to overcome his crafty Malaysian opponent in his opening match. The match saw many exciting exchanges with Jaden displaying sparks of brilliance which I was proud of.

Both players returned richer in experience which, we believe, will serve them well in their future exploits in the arena.

Raiders would like to thank the Singapore Taekwondo Federation for the opportunity and support. The trip had certainly enriched the experience of the two boys. For which, they and their parents were also grateful.”

1st Daedo Taekwondo Invitational Championships 2013

0

The tournament was held on 1 December 2013 at the premises of the Singapore American School. Here is a brief report by Mr Lai Han Seng.

The 1st Daedo Taekwondo Invitational Championships 2013 was successfully staged on 1st December 2013 at the Singapore American School. The event attracted over 140 participants. What was special about this championship is that it was the first time that the Daedo Protector Scoring System (PSS) and Instant Video Review (IVR) was used for participants of the Young Junior and Junior categories.

This STF-sanctioned championships was organized by J H Kim Taekwondo Institute (Bukit Timah) and supported by the Youth Development Committee. The event was made possible with Singapore American Community Action Council (SACAC) for sponsoring the location and K&G Marketing for being the main sponsor.

It was an enlightening experience for many of the participants, as the system will only pick up impact when the electronic foot protector contacts properly on the electronic chest protector. Participants now know that kicks have to land squarely on the chest protector and contacting with the arm or forearm protector will no longer garner them points. However parents and students agree that it is a fair and transparent system. They also appreciate the opportunity given to the participants to try out the electronic system which in time to come may be implemented in local tournaments.

Besides the individual events, some of the boys were also matched up in team events, which increased the excitement in the hall as every affiliate rooted for their team.

The organizing committee would like to put on record its appreciation to officials, referees, volunteers and all for making the event a resounding success. Their hard work resulted in a well-run championships, which also received positive feedbacks.

The results of the competition are attached.

A Record for National Poomsae Referees

0

57 national poomsae referees participated in the National Poomsae Referee Refresher Course held on 25 November 2013 at the National Training Centre.

The course was conducted to keep national poomsae referees abreast with the latest in poomsae and to allow them revalidate their referee licenses. It entailed fundamentals of poomsae refereeing, recognized poomsae judging and free-style poomsae judging.

The teaching mode included Powerpoint presentation, video show and practical training.

At the end of the session, all the referees were tested on their theoretical and practical knowledge. All of them proved to be ready for their next refereeing assignment by passing the tests. Their achievement was a record as it was the first time a 100 per cent pass rate was registered for a course.

Congratulations to the following.
