Poomsae Coach Course For Examiners

0

9 examiners qualified as poomsae coaches after they successfully completed the rigorous poomsae coach course held on 30 September 2006.

They were Chow Pak Hoong, G Rajendran, Lee Thiam Huat, Nordon Lim, Philip Choo, Sam Tan, Tan Kok Heng, Wong Liang Ming and Yeo Boon Thiang. They went through the same programme as the senior examiners and acquired new knowledge which would be useful in their functions as examiners and coaches.

Said Chow: “Although I had attended a similar course, I found this course more educational and interesting.  The explanations were clear and the principles made it easy for me to understand the finer points of poomsae.

“I look forward to the next upgrading course by the STF.”

The course was conducted by Lim Teong Chin and assisted by Chin Khee Shin, Steven Soh, RA Jeyaraman and Tan Cheng Hui.The importance of the course was underlined by the presence of the STF President Milan Kwee.  His personal interest in the course was appreciated by the participants who put in additional effort in their training.

Their exemplary training attitude and enthusiasm made it difficult for the senior examiners to pick the top three performers.  After some deliberation with input from Mr Kwee, they named Sam Tan, Thiam Huat and Kok Heng the best performers.

In fact, all the participants deserved to be applauded for believing in their own continuing education.

Tough Training For Senior Examiners

0

Senior examiners – Chin Khee Shin, Steven Soh and RA Jeyaraman – participated in a rigorous training programme for the poomsae coach certification on 28 September 2006 at the National Training Centre.  It was conducted by Chief Examiner Lim Teong Chin and supervised by STF President Milan Kwee.

The training was part of their continuing education programme to ensure that they were updated with the latest development in the sport and remained competent and relevant.

The participants went through the training like they were still in their prime.

It was blood, sweat and no tears for them.  During the training, Chin bled when he bruised his arm.  As they gave their all in the humid environment, they perspired profusely.  There were no tears as they enjoyed the training very much.

Laughed Jeya: “ It was like old times except we are so much older.”

At the end of the programme, they took the theory and practical tests with confidence.

Poomsae Coach Course

0

The latest poomsae changes, which were introduced during the ‘Wired To Win’ Poomsae Seminar in March 2006, would be officially implemented from April 2007 centralised grading onwards. Based on feedback, we understand that a good number of coaches are still unsure of the various changes.  They have requested for the Federation to organize poomsae training for them.

In response to their requests, we have decided to organize a series of courses for smaller groups based on the participants’ grades and period in the sport.  This will allow them to clarify any doubts comfortably among their peers.  At the same time, our course conductors can share the finer points of the poomsae movements more effectively.

Here are the courses available

Course A (for 4th to 6th Dan)  –  Saturday, 21 October 2006 (1pm to 9pm)
Course B (for 2nd & 3rd Dan)  –  Sunday, 22 October 2006 (9am to 5pm)

Course F (for 3rd to 6th Dan)   –  Sunday, 5 November 2006 (9am to 5pm)

All the courses will be held at the National Training Centre.  Each course is limited to a maximum of 30 participants.  The STF reserves the right to cancel any course if there are insufficient participants.  Applications will be accepted on a first-come first-served basis.

The course fee is $50 per participant.

Private lessons may be arranged with the Secretariat.  The course fee for such lessons is $150 per person (minimum of 4 persons per group).

Singapore’s First Two Poomsae International Referee

0

The STF produced its first two international poomsae referees when Lim Teong Chin and Tan Cheng Hui passed the gruelling examinations conducted by the WTF at the end of the 6th International Poomsae Referee Seminar.

The course, which drew 95 participants from 22 countries, was held from 24 to 27 June 2006 at Korea Sports University in Seoul, Korea.

The tests comprised theory, poomsae and judging.

For the written examination, candidates had to answer thirty questions which tested their understanding of the rules and regulations and the finer points of poomsae basic movements.  It was followed by an assessment of their ability to perform the poomsae which was randomly selected by the examiner.

The judging segment was the most difficult as candidates were expected to give the same or almost the same score as the ‘experts’ for each performance.  Marks were deducted for wrong scores.

To pass the test, candidates had to get at least 70% of the possible marks for each of the components.

Congratulations to both of them!

19 Participants Pass Referee Course

19 successful participants in the 30th National Referee Course were awarded Class 3 (P) National Referee certification.  The course held on 5, 6, 10 & 13 August 2006 attracted 23 members.

Mr Lee Thiam Poh and Mr Lee Thiam Huat, both international referees , conducted the course comprising theory and practical.  The theory lessons included some interesting topics like mental preparation for referees and principles of judgement.  These important subjects were usually not taught in international referee seminars.

For the practical sessions, the participants learned the various refereeing procedures and hand signals.  They also went through some refereeing and judging under simulated conditions.

The training served them well when they were put on trial by fire.  They were assigned to officiate in the national championships in August 2006 and performed creditably.

The participants were awarded the qualification through the recommendations of Mr Yeo Boon Thiang, also an international referee.  Mr Yeo assessed them based on their performance in both the theory and practical tests.

Mr Chin Khee Shin and Mr RA Jeyaraman tested the participants.  They were impressed by the performances of almost all the participants.

Said Mr RA Jeyaraman: “I am pleased with the standard of their display.  What’s more, I like the seriousness shown by them during the test.”

The results of their assessments:  Only 3 out of the 57 failed!

Coach Briefing

0

More than 125 coaches attended the briefing held on 10 September 2006 at 7.00pm at the National Training Centre.

The briefing started on a poignant note with participants observing a one-minute silence in honour of the memory of coaches and an official of the STF who had passed on.

It was followed by an opening speech by STF President Milan Kwee.  Among other things, he said that he was glad to observe that the discipline of members had improved since he took over the helm.  He urged the coaches to continue to not only inculcate the right values in their students but also serve as their students’ role models.

After the speech, Mr Lim Teong Chin conducted the briefing.  He covered three areas – discipline, best practices and grading.

Pursuing the points made by the President, Mr Lim appealed to the coaches to help the STF achieve its mission of making discipline a characteristic of taekwondo practitioners.  He believed it could be accomplished with their co-operation and support.
