A Great Demonstration By World Best

“It was a great show!”

“Fantastic”

“Lucky, we did not miss the event.”

“The show  was worth seeing.”

“It was an eye opener.”

These were some of the comments made by spectators at the Korean Taekwondo Spectacular 2005 held on 12 November at the Toa Payoh Sports Hall.

The hall was jam-packed with spectators anticipating awesome performances from the Korean National Taekwondo Demonstration Team. They were not disappointed as the team displayed one breathtaking stunt after another.

Each performance was greeted by enthusiastic applause and appreciative screams. The atmosphere was simply electrifying.

Before the commencement of the great show, HE Ryu, Kwang-sok, Ambassador of the Emabassy of the Repubilc of Korea, present Mr. Milan Kwee, President of the STF, an assortment of taekwondo equipment on behalf of the World Taekwonod Federation.

It was to celebrate the continued inclusion of taekwondo in the Olympics and to promote greater appreciation of the sport in Singapore.

The STF would like to put on record its appreciation to the following for the memorable moments, contribution and support.

3 From Singapore Attend Refresher Seminar

Lee Thiam Poh, Chow Pak Hoong and Lim Teong Chin were among 250 international referees who attended the 52nd International Referee Refresher Seminar held from 19 to 21 October 2005 in Kukkiwon, Seoul, Korea.

Participants were taught the latest competition rules, the psychology of refereeing and the moral expectations of referees for the theory sessions.
For the practical session, they performed hand signals and refereeing under simulated conditions.

The seminar rounded off with theory and practical tests which the three experienced local participants had no problem going through.

5 Bronze Medals at Vietnam Tourney

14 teams from 7 countries competed for honours in the 4th LG Vietnam Taekwondo Open 2005. The tournament staged from 20 to 25 July 2005 in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam brought out the best in all contestants.

Our players justified their participation in the competition with creditable performances. Although they returned with 5 bronze medals, they did us proud with their strong fighting spirit in a highly competitive tournament

The medals came from Khor Huat Peng, Poh Tze Chap, Lanetar Quek, Joyce Lim and Dawn Ang.

Ananurmelati, who was not among our medallists, deserved special mention. At 16 years old, she showed tremendous courage to give her Australian opponent, a prospective candidate for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, a hard time. She lost on superiority after recording a 9 – 9 draw.

Said Team Manager Tan Cheng Hui; “I am pleased with the performances of our players. They did their best and that was good enough for me.”

[MUST SEE] Korea Taekwondo Spectacular

The STF has arranged a team of top Korean demonstrators to perform on  12 November at  7.30pm at Toa Payoh Sports Hall.

All are welcome to witness the performance which promises to be an exciting show of outstanding taekwondo stunts. 

It is an event not to be missed especially for all taekwondo practitioners. As admission is free, we expect a large crowd. 

The gates will be closed as soon as the hall is filled to capacity.

Grading Fees Revision

It has been almost ten years since we last revised the grading fees.

Although it is justifiable for us to do so, we have resisted mainly because of the poor economic situations at the various periods. After biting the bullet for many years, we have decided to review the fees as we felt that the time is right.

Moreover, it is necessary for us to look into the interest of our coaches and the need to meet the rising costs of administration, operations and programmes of the Federation.

The Managerment Committee, in its meeting on 11 October 2005, decided unanimously on the following grading fee structure whuch will be effective from the 2nd quarter grading in April 2006.

32nd National Taekwondo Championships

439 players from 51 clubs vied for honours in the 32nd National Taekwondo Championships 2005. The event held on 27 and 28 August 2005 at Yishun Sports Hall was part of Pesta Sukan (Festival of Sports).

ACME Taekwondo took the overall title with 10 gold, 4 silver and 7 bronze medals.Police Sports Association with 7 gold, 1 silver and 3 bronze medals finished second followed by Paya Lebar Kovan CC with 4 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze medals.

It was a well-organised tournament which saw many of the players displaying outstanding techniques and tactics. The referees also did a good job in bringing out the best from the players.

Dr. Janice Khoo (SSC Board Member), Mr. Milan Kwee (STF President) and Mr. R Jeyaraman (STF 2nd Vice-President) witnessed the event and gave away the prizes.

Mixed Fortunes in Korea Open

Our team returned from the 1st Korea Open International Taekwondo Championship held from 4 – 8 September 2005 in Seoul, Korea with an 8th position overall and 1 silver and 3 bronze medals.

Considering that the competition attracted 33 countries including top contenders like Korea, Chinese Taipei and Iran, we reckoned the results were good.

Koh Huat Peng, who was not one of the medallists, deserved special mention for his courageous performance against the best player in his category. He showed scant respect for his formidable Korean opponent by taking a 2 – 1 lead.

As luck would have it, a freak accident occurred. The two players clashed. Huat Peng emerged from it with a deep tear below his lower lip.

The referee had to give the decision to Huat Peng’s opponent after the medical officer could not stem the flow of blood from the wound. While Huat Peng was in hospital for treatment, his opponent went on to clinch the feather weight title.Our medals came from the following:

Taekwondo Players Receive Spex Grants

4 taekwondo players received their SPEX Study Grant on 8 October 2005 at the National Stadium Theatrette.

The grant was given annually by the Singapore Sports Council (SSC) to outstanding student athletes who have received good results in sports while studying.

While Lanetar Quek Yu (Junior College), Cornelyus Ng Jian Hui (Junior College) and Dawn Ang Kai Ying (Polytechnic) received their awards from Mr.Wayde Clews, SSC Chief (High Performance Group), Fong Yee Min (Part-time Diploma/Degree) collected hers from the Guest-of-Honour, Mr. Oon Jin Teck, SSC Chief Executive Officer.

All the recipients were grateful for their grants.

Said Dawn: “I would like to thank the SCC for the grant. It helps sustain my interest in the sport.”

Lanetar thanked the SSC for the grant and said that it was helpful in supporting her financially while she worked hard to achieve her ambition.

In addition to showing her appreciation to the SSC and the STF, Yee Min said: “ I owe my achievements to my coaches.”

Cornelyus found the grant beneficial to his pursuit of both his studies and sport. He also registered his thanks to the coaches, the STF and the SSC.

Mr. RA Jeyaraman (2nd Vice President) and Mr. Tan Cheng Hui (Management Committee Member) from the STF witnessed the presentation and congratulated the recipients.

SSC Scholarship for Two Taekwondo Players

Vincent Chua Kheng Hui (Ngee Ann Polytechnic) and Low Chuan Kai (Singapore Polytechnic) were awarded the Singapore Sports Council (SSC) Scholarship 2005/2006 in September 2005.

They thanked the SSC and their respective institutions for the award and pledged to do their best in their studies and sport.

Both award recipients are national players.
