Our ‘warriors’ collect 1 gold, 4 silver and 3 bronze medals to finish 4th in the multi-sport Danga Bay International Games
The taekwondo event, which was staged from 5 to 9 April 2006 at Pasir Gudang, Johor, Malaysia, attracted 12 teams.
The medals winners were
– Cornelyus Ng (Gold) – Nicholas Lau (Silver) – Saw Teng Sheng (Silver) – Nur Zulaikha (Silver) – Dawn Ang (Silver) – Jason Ong (Bronze) – Lanetar Quek (Bronze) – Ed-Millia Ong (Bronze)
STF President Milan Kwee, who was happy with the results, congratulated the team on the fine performance. He urged them to continue training hard and bring honour to Singapore.
Eighteen teams from six countries converged in Hong Kong for the 10th Asian Cities Gold Cup Taekwondo Championships. The standards of the competition were elevated with the participation of top countries in the sport including Chinese Taipei and China.
Our team comprising 8 male and 5 female players acquitted themselves well despite the rigorous competition. Their determination and guts saw them clinch two team awards – 4th runner-up (Female) and Best Fighting Spirit (Male).
On top of the team recognition, the players returned with 1 gold (Jason Ong), 2 silver (Lanetar Quek and Dawn Ang) and 2 bronze (Ong Tian Ling and Nur Zulaikha) medals.
Asked to provide some highlights of our team’s performance, Ng Lee Noi, the team manager, said: “Jason Ong was without doubt, the most outstanding player of the team. He grew better and stronger with each bout. He made his way to the final by eliminating players from China and Malaysia. His final bout against Hong Kong was nothing short of brilliant. He controlled the fight right from the beginning and eventually wrapped it up 9-3.
“Chuan Kai’s performance was also interesting. He had no problem overcoming his opponent from China in the first match winning 7-4. In the next match, it was a closely contested affair with both players going for the kill. The match ended with 6 points each. It was a nail-biting sudden death round with the home crowd cheering for his Hong Kong opponent. Chuan Kai landed a perfectly timed counter kick but the point was awarded to the Hong Kong player instead. Chuan Kai was obviously robbed. As it was part and parcel of the game, we accepted the decision with grace.” All in all, it was a good outing for us.
318 coaches and 18 examiners attended the “Wired to Win” Poomsae Seminar held on 26 March 2006 at Toa Payoh Sports Hall.
The event was originally scheduled to be conducted at the National Training Centre. However, the overwhelming response forced the STF to change the venue.
STF President Milan Kwee kicked off the programme with a speech on various areas ranging from discipline to coaches’ continuing education.

It was followed by a talk on the development of poomsae by Chief Examiner Lim Teong Chin and a practice session led by Senior Examiner Chin Khee Shin, Examiner Tan Cheng Hui and Examiner Yeo Boon Thiang.
Organising Chairman Edmund Tan said: “The coaches found the seminar useful. I believe the knowledge they gained would eventually benefit their students.”
“I am glad that the seminar has achieved its objectives of, among other things, keeping the coaches abreast of the latest changes and development in poomsae and equipping them with the finer points of the various movements.”
On the application for conversion from Poom to Dan certification, the STF requires members to apply through their respective clubs under which they had taken the grading. This may not always be possible or convenient as the club may have closed or the members may have joined another club.
Under the circumstances, we will allow the application through the new club provided we are satisfied that the former club has no objection to the application or that it is no longer existing.

We notice that more and more female participants are wearing coloured T-shirt with their uniform. This is actually against conventional practice. Furthermore, coloured T-shirts ‘kill’ the significance of ‘dobok’ (taekwondo uniform).
Please inform your female participants to wear plain white T-shirt with their uniform. This will be required for all events organized or sanctioned by the STF.
While we are on this subject, we would appreciate it if you could remind your male participants that they should not wear any T-shirt with their uniform.
We have decided to postpone the Pee Wee Poomsae Championships to accommodate two new categories and reduce the requirement for the competition. This decision is made after considering the numerous feedback and requests from our affiliates.
In view of the extension of the ages of competitors, the event has been renamed National Young Junior Poomsae Championships. The relevant information is attached.

Those who have registered for the Pee Wee competition do not have to reapply.

The relocation of the Secretariat is necessary because the National Stadium has been earmarked for demolition in 2007 and re-construction into a Sports Hub by 2012,
