Interview Questions for Candidates

0

In an effort to make taekwondo recognized as a character development sport, the Singapore Taekwondo Federation (STF) had introduced pledge-taking for all its members before each training session.

It will not be enough because the pledge is meaningless if the words expressed in it are not understood and translated into deeds. For example, honesty is just a word if one understands it as just not telling lies. The STF wants its members to know that honesty means more than that and expects them to embrace the value.

To guide members towards being better persons and citizens, all red 1 (senior and junior) and 1st and 2nd poom and dan candidates will be required to be interviewed immediately after their practical tests from the January 2010 grading. All candidates must pass this new requirement to qualify for promotion.

For some questions, better answers are expected from senior candidates. The examiner will accept simple but correct answers from an 8-year old poom belt but not a 25-year old 2nd dan candidate. During this segment of the test, the examiner will also take into consideration the demeanor of the candidates.

The list of questions which the examiner will select from is attached to help candidates prepare for the test. The examiner reserves the right to ask any number of questions.

A Member of Parliament Earns His 2nd Dan

0

Mr Lim Biow Chuan, Member of Parliament (MP) for Marine Parade GRC, was promoted to 2nd dan in a grueling promotion test conducted by Chief Examiner and Chairman of the Board of Examiners, Mr Lim Teong Chin, on 3 October 2009 at the temporary Singapore Taekwondo Federation National Training Centre.

Although Mr Lim achieved is 1st dan some time in 1984 – that is 25 years ago – he showed that he still had what it took to be a ‘fighting’ MP. Mr Lim had no problem going through the test requirements which included poomsae, sparring and unarmed combat.

His inspired performance could also be attributed to the support he received from his family who were at the sideline watching him in action.

From left: Lee Choong Hwa, Sunny Seow, Lee Kwang Peng, Lim Biow Chuan, Lim Teong Chin and Tan Tian Soon.

Two other taekwondo ‘veterans’, Mr Sunny Seow Chan Teng and Mr Lee Choong Hwa joined Mr Lim in the grading. Like Mr Lim, they proved worthy of the coveted 2nd dan.

Said the Chief Examiner: “I was impressed by their performance. In fact, they performed better than some of the candidates who were many years younger than them.

“They deserved to pass because they demonstrated courage, determination and more than sufficient techniques and tactics.”

The Singapore Taekwondo Federation congratulates all of them on their promotion.

Feedback Boxes for Your Use

0

The Singapore Taekwondo Federation (STF) is constantly looking for ways to serve its members better despite the improvements made over the past few years.

Credit must be given to members who have given the STF many ideas which have helped to make the organization relevant to them. However, the STF believes that there are always new and better ways to give its members the best service they deserve.

Under the circumstances, the STF has provided feedback boxes at the Secretariat and the Training Centre for members to deposit their suggestions. Feedback forms are placed at the boxes for the convenience of members wishing to share their thoughts.

Of course, members may continue to provide their feedback by email. The STF email address is tkdf@pacific.net.sg.

Please understand that it is not possible for the STF to implement all suggestions because of various constraints. But members can rest assured that the Management Committee will do their best to do all they can for them.

Unarmed Combat Course (Level 2)

All holders of Level 1 unarmed combat certification are invited to participate in the course which will be conducted under the supervision of RA Jeyaraman, a certified unarmed combat coach under the Asian Taekwondo Union.

His team will include Tan Kim Hoon who has many years of experience teaching unarmed combat in the Singapore Armed Forces and Mr Lim Keng Leong and Mr Tan Cheng Hui, both qualified unarmed combat course conductors under the Singapore Taekwondo Federation.

The course details and application form are attached.

No Retest, No Promotion

0

Participants who have not taken their retest for the Poomsae Upgrading Course would not be promoted if they do not do so by Saturday 31 October 2009.

By then, more than a month has elapsed since the course was conducted.  The period and opportunity given should be more than enough for them to prepare for the retest.

Those who wish to take the test may call Jolene, Theresa or Rosalind to arrange for the retest.

If you know of any coaches who have not taken the retest, please advise them to do so by the last date given.  The Singapore Taekwondo Federation will not accept any excuse for the extension of the retest date.

Tell Your Students the Whole Truth

0

Recently all participants taking up taekwondo in Community Centers/Clubs (CCs) and Resident’s Committee Centers (RCs) are asked to sign a form acknowledging that they had read the advisory notes. Although the notes are factually correct, they do not reflect the whole picture.

Based on the notes, participants will not know whether they can represent their schools in the National School Taekwondo Championships which will be officially included in the school sports calendar in 2010 unless they ask.

They will not know if they can carry Singapore flag in the SEA Games, Youth Olympic Games and other multi-sports events unless they ask.

They will not know if their grades are recognized by a handful of members or by thousands locally and internationally unless they ask.

They will not know the status of the taekwondo organization they are with unless they ask.

But how many will ask?

All Singapore Taekwondo Federation coaches should not wait for their participants to ask. You should be proud to inform your participants the organization they are with, the privileges they can have for being your students and their grades are recognized by a body and not just a legally registered club.

More importantly, tell them factually about the other legally registered clubs. Articles in the must-read column on the STF website (www.stf.sg) should be able to give your students a better idea of the clubs. Encourage them to visit the website regularly for the latest updates.

First Singaporean World-Ranked Taekwondo Player

0

Jacqueline Quek Jie Lin earned her world ranking when she finished third in the Asian Martial Arts Games held in Bangkok, Thailand in August 2009. She is ranked 48th in the under 73kg for the women category.

With that, she became the first Singaporean to be ranked since the ranking of players was introduced by the World Taekwondo Federation on 1 January 2009.

Jacqueline and her sister, Geraldine, both members of Leng Kee CC, were recommended by their coach, Derrick Tang, for inclusion in the National Training Squad in 2008. Although Geraldine showed more potential in the beginning, it was Jacqueline who went on to accomplish more.

In her first international assignment in Danga Bay Tournament in 2008, Jacqueline returned with a bronze medal. 1 year later, she took the silver medal in the Asian Cities Gold Cup held in Hong Kong in February 2009 and continued her medal-winning streak with a gold in the Asean Taekwondo Championships held on 6 June 2009 in Vietnam before she reached the podium in the Asian Martial Arts Games.

Jaqueline has recently been selected to represent Singapore in the World Taekwondo Championships in October 2009 in Copenhagen, Denmark.

The Singapore Taekwondo Federation wishes her the best in her maiden World competition.
