Assisi Hospice Starts Taekwondo

0

Children with cancer under the care of the Assisi Hospice had their first taekwondo lesson under Mr Milan Kwee and Mr Lim Teong Chin on 9 November 2006.  Their faces lighted up when they donned their ‘dobok’.  Each movement taught was delivered with gusto.  And the instructors were simply proud of them.

The taekwondo programme was introduced as a result of a request to the Singapore Taekwondo Federation (STF), the national sports association for the sport, from Ms Geraldine Lee, the Public Affairs & Volunteer Program Manager of the Hospice.  It is conducted once a week, at first, at the premises of Assisi Hopice.  Owing to space constraint at the Hospice, it was decided to move the training to the STF National Training Centre.

Said Ms Lee: “I believe the training will boost their confidence and make them mentally stronger to face their illness.”

Wanting to make a positive difference in the children’s journey with cancer, the STF Management not only approved the programme but also sponsored it in full.  What’s more, many of its coaches came forth to volunteer their services in the spirit of taekwondo.

Mr Kwee and Mr Lim decided to take responsibility for the programme.  They drew up the training plan which included a warrior’s ritual to help strengthen the participants mentally.

After four training sessions with the participants, Mr Kwee and Mr Lim were delighted with the progress. The enthusiasm displayed by the trainees was awesome.

Mr Kwee added: “We are glad to be given the opportunity to share our knowledge and make a positive difference in their lives.”

Assisi Hospice is a registered Charity and provides an integrated palliative care programme of In-Patient Care, Home Care and Day Centre Care for adults and children with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses.

Courses Organized By The Singapore Taekwondo Federation (STF)

0

As the STF believes in the importance of continuing education, it has conducted numerous courses and seminars for its members.  While some courses offered will qualify participants in certain skills, others are organized to enhance or update their knowledge.  For example, the referee course is a qualification course and the refresher course is to allow participants to review what they have learnt and provide them the latest information and development.

Here are the various courses organized by the STF.

Qualification Courses

– National Coaching Accreditation Programme (NCAP) Technical or Taekwondo Coaching Course
– National Kyorugi Referee Course
– National Poomsae Referee Course
– Poomsae Coach Course
– Unarmed Combat Programme

The common question asked by members is:  What is the difference between Poomsae Coach Course and NCAP Technical?  In NCAP (Level 1), we cover poomsae.  But it is not as detailed as the poomsae taught during the Poomsae Coach Course.  On top of that, the Poomsae Coach Course adequately prepares the coaches to train and lead players for the poomsae competition.  Having an NCAP qualification does not give you the knowledge and qualification to do so.

To give you a clearer picture, NCAP (Level 2) covers competition rules and regulations.  But having NCAP (Level 2) does not qualify you to officiate as a referee in a kyorugi competition.

Non-qualification Courses/Seminars/Workshops/Talks/Briefings

– National Kyorugi Referee Refresher Course
– National Poomsae Referee Refresher Course
– “Wired to Win” Seminar
– “Wired to Win” Workshop/Talk/Briefing

“Wired to Win” Seminar and Workshop/Talk/Briefing are organized regularly to update coaches on STF policies and taekwondo technical and educational developments.  It also provides information on various areas of sports science, marketing and club management.  Coaches registered with the Singapore Sport Council National Registry of Coaches are awarded Continuing Coach Education (CCE) points for their attendance in the activities.

The Singapore Taekwondo Federation (STF) and its partners – Globewerks International and Singapore Expo – are planning to organize the lst Sinapore Open Taekwondo Championships from 5 to 8 July 2007.  The event already had the approval of the Singapore Sports Council and the support to the Embassy of the Republic of Korea.

On 22 November 2006, Mr Milan Kwee, STF President, and Mr Lim Teong Chin, STF GM, were in Korea to meet Mr Choue Chungwon, the President of the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF), and Mr Moon Dong-Hoo, WTF Secretary-General, to discuss about the organizing of the event.  More specifically, they were there to seek the support and blessing of the WTF.

The two Singapore representatives were warmly welcomed at the WTF Secretariat in Gangnam.  After a brief exchange of pleasantries, the four officials sat down to talk about ‘business’.

After the discussion, Mr Kwee received a letter, endorsing the event and complimenting his leadership, from Mr Choue.

The WTF also accepted STF’s invitation to showcase the talents of 35 top members from the Korean national demonstration team during the championships and agreed to speak with Samsung (WTF Global Partner) to support the event.  It would also consider STF’s request for the use of the latest electronic protectors for the tournament after the approval of the equipment in February 2007.

During the visit, Mr Kwee and Mr Lim also had a fruitful discussion with Mr Choi Ki Cheol, Secretary-General of the Asia Taekwondo Union (ATU) and Mr Sim Myeong Koo, ATU Referee Vice-Head.  They also paid Mr Lee Dai Soon, ATU President, and Mr Park Hyun-Sup, Kukkiwon Director, a courtesy visit and updated them on the developments of taekwondo in Singapore.

OI Gathering At The NTC

On 25 November 2006, a non-taekwondo event was held at the National Training Centre.  It was a gathering which brought together children suffering from brittle bone condition, their parents, doctors and nurses.  They were there to interact, network and understand the disease better.

The STF provided them not only the use of the place but also a demonstration as part of its entertainment segment.  What’s more, members of the national squad and their parents contributed food and drinks for the occasion.

Said Jeremy Lim, the organizing chairman of the event: “I am touched by the generosity of the taekwondo people.

“I had written to several organizations for the use of their premises only the STF gave me a positive response.  Not only that, it offered to give a performance which I could not refuse.

“When the members of the national squad and their parents found out about the gathering, they volunteered to help out.  What can I say?  I was impressed!

“On behalf of the Osteogenesis Imperfecta (Brittle Bone) Support Group, I would like to register our heartfelt thanks to the STF and all those who have contributed to the success of the event.  All of you have shown the true spirit of taekwondo.”

The STF was pleased that it could play a part in the success of a good cause.

Certificate Presentation Ceremony Held For Poomsae Coaches

0

More than 150 qualified poomsae coaches attended the certificate presentation ceremony on 26 November 2006 at the National Training Centre.

It was a simple yet dignified ceremony which saw the coaches receiving their certificates from Mr Milan Kwee, President of the STF, according to their levels.

The levels were accorded to the coaches based on their grades.  Level 1 (Provisional) was given to coaches who possess a 1st dan blackbelt.  A full Level 1 qualification was awarded to 1st dan blackbelt holders with NCAP certification and 2nd dan coaches.  While 3rd and 4th dan coaches were given Level 2 certification, 5th dan and higher coaches received Level 3 qualification.

For future poomsae coach courses, ALL participants regardless of their ranking will commence from Level 1 (Provisional) if they do not have NCAP qualification and Level 1 if they do.  Their dan qualification will not be used as a yardstick for the different levels.

The levels will indicate the proficiency of the coaches to teach the various patterns.  Level 1 (Probationary) and Level 1 coaches can teach effectively up to Poomsae Koryo.  Level 2 coaches are qualified to teach up to Poosae Sipjin and Level 3 coaches, up to Poomsae Hansu.

The certificate presentation ceremony was preceded by an interesting talk by Dr Lee Chee Wee, CEO of LYNK Biotechnologies Pte Ltd, on the effect of martial sports on joints. It was rounded off with gifts for all certificate recipients and a buffet brunch which provided ample opportunity for officials and coaches to interact with one another.

Accreditation Accorded To 13 Coaches

0

13 coaches locked, threw and kicked their partners on 19 November 2006 at the National Training Centre to impress the assessors.  They had to do that because they were undergoing the unarmed combat accreditation assessment.

Candidates were given 15 minutes to display their unarmed combat skills including defence against an assailant using various weapons.  After that, they were assessed on their theoretical knowledge of self-defence.

Most of the candidates could perform reasonably well.  However, they found it challenging when it came to answering the questions.

The oldest participant, seventy-year-old Mr Ong Ban Guan, proved that age was of no barrier.  He could still execute a mean throw and take a bad fall.  Although he could not outperform his younger counterparts, he certainly could draw some admiration from them for being so courageous and sporting.

Mr Milan Kwee, STF President, who witnessed the assessments conducted by Mr Lim Teong Chin and Mr Chin Khee Shin, shared his observations with the participants at the end of the session.  While he was impressed with some of the performances, he felt that some of the techniques shown were not practical.

Mr. Kwee should know as he was trained in unarmed combat too!

The results:  All 13 coaches were accredited their respective levels ranging from Level 1 to 3.

A Spectacular Show

0

On 3 November 2006, more than 1,500 students and their teachers from Catholic High School gathered at the school hall to witness a taekwondo demonstration.  They greeted the visitors from Gwangjingu Taekwondo Association with thunderous applause.

The warm welcome seemed to have inspired the 60 young Korean demonstrators who took to the stage to show of their skills.  Each performance drew oohs, aahs and a lot of excited cheers from the crowd.

Mr Park Chang-sik, the head of team, was visibly pleased with his charges.  With each successful item, he smiled, nodded and clapped.

For the students and teachers, it was a visual treat.  They found the performance unbelievable, fantastic and awesome.  These were the words used by them to describe their feelings of the demonstration.

The half-hour demonstration ended with an exchange of gifts between Mr. Park and Mdm Chua Puay Eng, the Head of Department (Chinese).

Mr Milan Kwee, President of the Singapore Taekwondo Federation, hosted a dinner for the team officials on 5 November before they left for home.
