All Five TKD Athletes Return with SEA Games Medals

0

Singapore fielded five taekwondo athletes for the 26th SEA Games which were held from 12 to 15 November 2011 in Jakarta, Indonesia.  All five returned with a medal to show.

The medals they won were as follows.

  • Joyce Lim (Silver in Female Individual Poomsae)
  • Samuel Lee (Bronze in Male Individual Poomsae)
  • Samuel Lee, Jason Tan and Muhammad Norhalim (Bronze in the Male Team Poomsae)
  • Jason Tan (Bronze in Kyorugi)
  • Jacqueline Quek (Bronze in Kyorugi)

Jason became the first taekwondo exponent to win a medal in both the poomsae and kyorugi events.

The results were better than the last SEA Games in Laos where we finished with two bronze medals.  They were also creditable considering that quite a number of sports with many more representatives returning with fewer medals.

The Singapore Taekwondo Federation (STF) nominated 4 poomsae performers and 6 kyorugi players.  Only 2 for poomsae and 3 for kyorugi were selected despite all the nominees having under their belts international medals.  It was really sad because some of the potential medal winners including the 2011 best school sports boy were not selected.

The STF felt like it was going to ‘war’ with its limbs chopped off.  Not only that, some of the players who had been dropped had decided to focus on their studies instead of competing for a place in future international competitions.

Looks like the STF will have to start from base to build a new team with the remaining current players for the next Games in Myanmar.

With the support of its affiliates, the STF is confident that it can overcome the challenges!

The STF is prepared to invest on potential players who are interested to train full-time.  Please email the STF at stf@singapore.com to nominate the players for the Management Committee to consider.

Taekwondo Spectacular Is Back

0

Taekwondo Spectacular featuring numerous breathtaking stunts and gravity-defying movements is back with a difference. It will be presented by the Embassy of the Republic of Korea and the Singapore Taekwondo Federation (STF) in conjunction with the Korea Festival 2011.

The event which will be held on Saturday 3 December 2011 at 7.30pm at Jurong East Sports Hall will involved a taekwondo legend, the World Taekwondo Federation demonstration team and the STF National Demonstration Team.

The legend? It is none other than the father of USA taekwondo, Grandmaster (GM) Jhoon Rhee, who taught taekwondo to arguably the best martial artist in the World, the late Bruce Lee and coached the renowned former World Heavyweight Champion Mohammad Ali the ‘Acu-Punch’ which Ali used to knock out Richard Dunn, the British Champion, in the first two minutes and five seconds of the fifth round of his title defense in Munich, Germany in 1976.

GM Rhee’s martial arts programme and philosophy of discipline, respect and personal responsibility were developed into a curriculum which was adopted by eight District of Columbia elementary schools in the early 1990s.

For Taekwondo Spectacular, GM Rhee, who is now 80 years old and can still perform 100 push-ups, will share with the spectators his philosophy.

The performance segment will showcase the products of the collaboration of WTF demonstrators with local performers. It promises to be a visual treat for the spectators.

Admission is free and on a first-come first served basis. The gate will be closed once the hall is filled. Last year, a number of spectators were locked out. Be early to avoid disappointment.

On the evening of 28 October 2011, officials from Ministry of Community Development Youth and Sports (MCYS) including its Acting Minister, Mr Chan Chun Sing, and its volunteers gathered at one of Marina Bay Sands Ballrooms for the MCYS Volunteer Awards 2011.

Singapore Taekwondo Federation (STF) President Milan Kwee was among the volunteers recognized that evening for his commendable Public Service. When the STF was in need of a strong leadership about six and a half years ago, he volunteered to take over the helm and steer the organization out of troubled waters. Today, the STF is in a better position to take on more challenges, serve its affiliates better and most importantly grow,

Mr Kwee will receive his Public Service Medal (Pingat Bakti Masyarakat – PBM) which is a National Day Award from the President of the Republic of Singapore later this month.

Olympic and 4-time World Champ Came and Gone

0

Prof Jung Kook Hyun, Olympic and 4-time World Champion, was in Singapore from 20 to 24 October 2011 to conduct two sparring workshops. He shared his secrets of what makes a champion to more than 50 lucky participants who found his teaching fun, vibrant and enlightening.

Interesting feedback was received after the workshops.

Said Adrian Lim of Apex TKD: “When I was a young, I looked up to Prof Jung as my idol. He was really fantastic. It was my good fortune that I had the opportunity to meet him in person at the workshop and, as a bonus, learn from him.”

Many participants were of the view that the workshops were not only value for money but also an excellent opportunity to pick up important points on sparring. They felt that it was a great loss for those who did not attend the workshops.

At the end of each workshop, the participants queued up to take pictures with Prof Jung. Some of them brought the discs produced by Prof Jung for him to autograph while the more ‘enterprising’ brought pictures taken with them for him to sign the next day.

While Prof Jung was in Singapore, he visited Induk TKD where one of his students was teaching. He also watched the TEAMgOLD members having their weekly session a the National Training Centre.

Said Prof Jung before he left Singapore: “I am glad that I accepted the invitation of the STF to conduct the workshops. During my stay in Singapore, I learned a lot of things. The country is clean and green and the people are very warm and friendly. The food was delicious. And the various initiatives undertaken by the STF are new to me.

“I am very impressed with the scheme to encourage those not-so-young to continue training. This is something I will bring back and share with my students.

“I would like to thank Mr Milan Kwee and many other officials including those from Induk TKD for making my visit to Singapore a memorable one.”
