The 25th Summer Universiade (University Games) scheduled to be held from 1 to 12 July 2009 in Belgrade, Serbia, would feature taekwondo poomsae competition in addition to the unsual kyorugi tournament.
It was the first significant progress made in making taekwondo poomsae a recognised event in the various international multi-sports competitions.
The introduction of poomsae competition in the Paralympics could be the next possibility.
So far two World Championships had been staged for poomsae. It would be interesting to note how long it would take for poomsae championships to the held at continental and regional levels.
For those who will be in the University next year, it is time to train for the event and hope that your University will field a poomsae team for the Summer Universiade.

act with integrity by, among other things, maintaining the highest standard of professional behaviour, personal conduct and appearance.
They also agreed to accept any disciplinary measure, ranging from warning to life suspension if they fail to fulfill their commitment.
Holders of the professional passes need not be teaching taekwondo for a living. But you can be assured that they have professional attitude.
Coaches may collect their professional passes from the Secretariat during office hours from Wednesday 27 February 2008.
The passes (see attachment) will be a requirement for all Federation organized and sanctioned championships.
The Singapore Taekwondo Federation (STF) Taekwondo Day held on 15 February 2008 at the National Training Centre was celebrated by more than 120 trainees, parents, coaches and officials. The event was graced by Prof Tan Cheng Han, STF Advisor, and Mr Ho Mun Wai, Singapore Sports Council Director (Planning & Portfolio Management).
After the a brief welcoming speech by STF President Milan Kwee and an equally brief speech by Prof Tan, the party was ‘blasted off by Prof Tan, Mr Ho and Mr Kwee. It was followed by the traditional ‘lo hei’ which was in keeping with the Lunar New Year festive spirit.
There was a lot of fun and games. Prizes were given out to everyone sporting enough to participate in the activities.
There were also Valentine’s Day gift exchange amongst the younger generation.
Talking about sporting, the organizers took their hats off for the parents.
Sporting Mummies & Daddies
They participated in numerous games and enjoyed themselves too. It was wonderful to see so much joy in one place.
Mummies vs Daddies
When it was time to call it a day, everyone including the parents helped to tidy up the place and clear the trash. It gave the feeling of a family party where everyone had fun and chipped in to help when required.
In short, the STF Taekwondo Day was a memorable family day to all who had participated in the event.
The Singapore Taekwondo Federation (STF) has received a number of queries regarding the use of mouth piece.
The primary concern is that the mouth piece may not be suitable for all players as some of them may find that wearing the mouth piece is more dangerous than not wearing it. The STF recognizes that this is possible because not all players will have a teeth structure that will allow the mouth guard to serve its purpose.
Therefore, the STF will
allow players to wear customized mouth guard made by orthodontist or
exempt players from wearing one if they can produce a letter from a doctor or dentist certifying that it would be more harmful for them to use the mouth guard.
Lee Thiam Huat’s dream of being an Olympic referee is almost coming true. In fact, you can be certain that he will be among the 29 referees who will be selected for the taekwondo event in the 2008 Beijing Olympics Games.
Thiam Huat and his elder brother Thiam Poh signed up for the International Referee Training Camp in July 2007. The camp was specially organized for international referees who aspired to officiate in the Games. It attracted 184 participants. After the grueling training and testing, the younger sibling was among 54 referees from 41 countries shortlisted.
All the referees were assigned to officiate in the World Qualifications for the Games and several Continental Qualifications.
After traveling round the world to referee in the various Qualification Tournaments, Thiam Huat was selected for the Good Luck Beijing 2008 International Taekwondo Invitational Tournament scheduled to be held from 26 to 29 February 2008 in Beijing, China. The competition would serve as a trial for the real event.
The selection was certainly a confirmation of Thiam Huat’s inclusion in the Olympics.
Well done, Thiam Huat! Continue to do Singapore proud.
The NTU Taekwondo Invitational Championships would be held from Friday 29 February 2008 to 2 March 2008 at the NTU Sports Hall. It is open to tertiary, polytechnics, institutes of technical education and junior college students.
The Singapore Taekwondo Federation would like to invite qualified poomsae and kyorugi national referees to participate in the event.
Please call Mr Lee Thiam Poh, Tournament Head, at 91064421 if you wish to officiate in the championships.
