Singapore Open Cancelled

The 1st Singapore Open Taekwondo Championships scheduled from 6 to 8 July 2007 had been cancelled.

The organizers had no choice because the event could not attract star teams in the sport. These teams had their own plans and could not fit the Singapore Open into their schedule.

Although there were many club teams interested in the event, the organizers decided not to proceed with the competition for obvious reason. They could not get the kind of sponsorship they could with big names. After all, their aim was to make the event prestigious, grand and memorable.

On behalf of the organizers, the STF would like to put on record its thanks to all those who had given their support or shown interest in the event.

Trained to Spar

50 poom belts gathered at the National Training Centre on 22 April 2007 for the Sparring Programme.

The programme kicked off with an opening address by Mr. Milan Kwee, President of the STF. Among other things, Mr Kwee highlighted to the participants the importance of discipline. And that included giving the utmost respect to their parents.

Mr Kwee reminded the participants that they would not have the opportunity to develop themselves if not for the support of their parents. He pointed out that they were taekwondo exponents not only in the gymnasium. They were taekwondo exponents every day of the week. Therefore, they were expected to conduct themselves like true taekwondo exponents at all times.

The programme continued with theory which covered the winner’s mindset, the winner’s recipe, the concept of time and space, the elements of speed and more.   After that the participants learned the finer points of sparring position and practiced footwork and bodywork.

Before they were taught how to apply the various skills, the participants were evaluated on their techniques. While some needed corrections, many only required to refine their skills.

When the participants were asked if they enjoyed the session, the answer was a resounding “Yes!” When they were asked if they had benefited from the programme, the response was the same.

All parents who witnessed the training were visibly delighted with the programme. One parent said that the he was glad because the programme also inculcated in the participants the value of respect.

The programme ended with a presentation of achievement certificates by Mr Kwee to all the participants.

STF President Meets Aspiring Examiners

Mr Milan Kwee, STF President, met seven senior taekwondo exponents, who aspired to be examiners, on 24 April 2007 to brief them on the qualities and responsibilities of an examiner.  He said that, if they had the qualifications and what it took to be an examiner, they might apply for the position.

The minimum qualifications required to be an examiner are as follows.

  • 5th dan
  • National Kyorugi Referee (Class 1)
  • National Poomsae Referee (Class 1)
  • Poomsae Coach (Level 3)
  • NCAP Technical (Level 2)
  • 2 years of contribution to the Federation

Mr Kwee stressed that having the qualifications would not be enough.  Candidates had to have character, compassion and the ability to work as a team.

The Federation would like to invite qualified senior exponents to apply for appointment as examiner.

Help Your Students

Mismatches are often witnessed during grading.

Smaller candidates are required to spar with bigger, stronger and taller partners. This is not an ideal situation to bring out the best in the candidates. It may also expose the candidates to greater risk of injury. What’s more, the unbalanced sparring conditions may make it difficult for the examiners to pass a fair judgment.

The Singapore Taekwondo Federation (STF) is confident that all instructors have their students at heart and want their students to do well in their grading. However, they may have inadvertently overlooked the importance of ensuring that the appropriate sparring partners are arranged for their students.

Hence, club leaders and instructors are reminded to arrange suitable sparring partners for their candidates at all levels for future grading. The candidates will certainly welcome the support and assistance from their clubs.

Instructors, who have not taught their students the new poomsae movements, are also reminded to do so.

It was noted that some clubs had not introduced them and as a result there were two standards – old and new. As the April 2007 grading is the target for the implementation of the new movements, the old standard is no longer acceptable. For the April 2007 grading, the examiners were generous to clubs who had not adopted the new standard. But they may not be so kind in the July 2007 grading.

The STF Management Committee would like to put on record its appreciation to all club leaders and instructors for going the extra mile for their students and ensuring that their students have a great experience in the sport.
