Wear STF-designed Uniform

0

In the recent tournaments, grading and other events organized by the Singapore Taekwondo Federation (STF) in which ‘dobok’ is the dress code, we found one or two members coming without the STF logo on their uniforms

We would like to remind all affiliates and their members that it is necessary to wear standard STF uniform including the STF crest when it is required for the event.

It can be unpleasant for all involved when we have to bar or disqualify anyone who has breached the uniform rule, from participation. Therefore, we ask for the co-operation of all affiliates and their members in this matter.

The 3 A’s Share the Limelight

Acme, Assisi and Aljunied finished top three in the 1st National Taekwondo Poomsae Championships held on 17 June 2007 at Toa Payoh Sports Hall.

The tournament attracted 350 participants from 38 clubs.

Acme TKD collected 12 first placings followed by Assisi Hospice Taekwondo Team with 5 and Aljunied CC with 4. While Acme and Aljunied were familiar names at the top of the table in almost every tournament organized by the Singapore Taekwondo Federation, Assisi surprised everyone in its maiden competition.

For the tournament, the seven-judge system was adopted to provide a fairer evaluation of the performances. All the competitors did well under the close scrutiny of the judges. But only a few managed to impress the judges enough to score higher than 8 points out of a possible of 10. Among them were Diana Inshera Lim and Soh Hong Ray. Both represented Assisi.

After scoring more than 8 points for their individual performances, they joined forces to register 8.18 points in the mixed pair category. With two titles and the highest scores under their belts, they were jointly named for the ‘Best Performer’ award.

One of the judges, Ng Lee Noi, commented: “They did not require any sympathy from the judges. They were good and won on their own merits.”

Speaking with STF President, Coach Brian Peh said: “I was surprised. How they achieved such high standards in such a short time? Their discipline and presentation displayed both by the Assisi coach and competitors were also outstanding.”

Assisi also took home the Fighting Spirit Award through Toh Shi Xiang who was a clear winner of the title.

Her citation reads: “Toh Shi Xiang has shown remarkable enthusiasm, courage and resilience to not only participate in the sport but also in this competition. She took up taekwondo about six months ago at Assisi Hospice which introduced the programme as a form of therapy for children with cancer. It was difficult for her but she persevered in the true spirit of the sport and was promoted to yellow belt after 3 months of training.

For the competition, she trained regularly and rigorously just like other athletes. In one training session, she felt weak and unsteady after pushing herself too hard. Instead of calling it quit for the day, she continued training after a short rest. That was not all.

Six days ago, she was hospitalized. She pleaded with the doctor to discharge her because she did not want to miss the competition today. She was allowed to leave only yesterday. Although she was still physically weak, she gallantly went through the routine with all the effort she could garner.

She did not win the top spot. She finished second but she won our admiration for her determination, courage and spiritual strength. She is indeed a worthy winner of the Fighting Spirit Award and an inspiration to us all.”

Liang Seng Sports Equipment Pte Ltd, the Federation’s official supplier, provided the icing on the Assisi’s cake. It presented Assisi Hospice with the Outstanding Achievement Award in recognition of the spectacular achievement of its taekwondo members, more popularly known as Taekwondo Warriors.

Louis Koh, the father of two poom belt participants who finished first in the team event, said: “I am sure the other children can learn a thing or two from the dedication and resilience displayed by the Assisi kids. My children did.”

Amazing Taekwondo Warriors

0

The Taekwondo Warriors from Assisi Hospice amazed the spectators with their ‘explosive’ performance on 8 June 2007 at Amex Staff Lounge. It was a special fund-raising event organized by American Express Community Club for the children of the Hospice.

The Warriors demonstrated the various components of the martial arts including one-step sparring and ‘poomsae’ (a series of movements incorporating ideal attacking and defensive techniques against imaginary opponents). They simply awed the spectators with their precision and power. Their power was brought out when they broke numerous planks with various techniques.

The spectators were certainly impressed by their indomitable spirit and zest for life despite the tremendous challenges they were facing.

If the planks represented their challenges, the Warriors looked set to conquer them. And the resounding cheers and applause they received from the spectators gave them the strength.

Go, Warriors, go! You are really amazing.

The seminar and assessment for national referees will be held on Sunday 1 July 2007 from 9am to 12noon at the National Training Centre.

It is essential for all referees to attend the seminar to familiarize themselves with the new scoring system and learn the new rules and regulations which will be implemented in the August National Championships.

National referees with expired licences may also attend the seminar. Their licences will be renewed if they pass the assessment conducted at the end of seminar.

The dress code for the seminar is ‘dobok’. Registration for the seminar and parking on that day are free.

The hours clocked for the seminar can be used as part of the NROC Coach Continuing Education requirements.

For registration, please call Jolene or Theresa at 6345 1491.

Jump with JUMP

By now you should have heard about the sensational acrobatic group JUMP. Many of you probably have bought tickets to watch their shows on Saturday 30 June 2007 and Sunday 1 July 2007 at Esplanade Theatre. If not, do so quickly as tickets are fast running out.

Here is more.

Cast members of JUMP, who are also taekwondo experts, will be at the National Training Centre on Thursday 28 June 2007 at 7.00pm to conduct a workshop only for black and poom belts recognised by the Singapore Taekwondo Federation. The dress code for participants is ‘dobok’.

Participants can learn from the cast members how they train to perform the gravity-defying stunts. They will also have the opportunity to practice some of the ‘easier’ movements.

The registration fee is $5.00 per participant. The fees collected will be used to defray costs for the event.

As the one and a half hour workshop can take a maximum of 60 participants, registration will be on a first-come first-served basis.

The registration form is attached. Registration closes on 22 June 2007.
