Invitation to Affiliate Leaders for a Retreat

0

The Singapore Taekwondo Federation (STF) will be organizing a retreat at Turi Beach Resort in Batam for affiliate leaders to help chart the direction of the organisation for its future development.

According to the plan at hand, the group will leave early on Saturday 25 April and return on the last ferry on Sunday 26 April 2009. The programme for the retreat includes, but not limited to, brainstorming sessions and discussions to put up a strategic plan which will help bring the STF to another level where it can better position itself to achieve its vision and mission more efficiently and effectively.

The theme of the event: “Towards a better STF”.

The STF believes that the event will also provide a good opportunity for affiliate leaders to develop the sense of ownership of the organisation and to foster a stronger bond of camaraderie among them.

The trip will cost about $300 per head. It will be absorbed by the STF in full for all ordinary affiliate leaders – one per registered affiliate. Leaders mean the key decision-makers of the affiliates.

Affiliate leaders are requested to register their interest in attending the retreat by Wednesday 4 March 2009. Only those who are sure that they can make the trip need to register as a full refund of the expenses will be required for absentees.

Family members and club members may join the trip at their own expense. The STF will help to make the necessary arrangement for their convenience. Club members – especially those who are young, articulate and brimming with ideas – are welcome to participate in the brainstorming sessions and discussions.

Don’t miss the chance of having your voices heard for a better STF. Make your opinions count!

Being Prepared for the Promotion Test

0

From the Grading Preparation Workshop held on Sunday 1 February 2009 at the National Training Centre, it looked like a good number would be going for their higher dan grading in April 2009.

13 out of 22 who attended the course are black belts. The rest were red belts.

The youngest and most junior among them was Chloe Lee Yan Win who was 8 years old and held a grade 2. However, she was not overwhelmed by the occasion. She laughed with the rest when there were some light-hearted moments during the theory session and smiled when she made movement errors during her practical lesson.

Said Lim Teong Chin, one of the course conductors: “She is not only very brave but also very intelligent. I am impressed by her composure and ability to learn the whole pattern, which was new to her, in quick time.”

Chin Khee Shin, RA Jeyaraman, Ng Hwa Ann, Tan Kok Heng and Leon Koh assisted in running the course.

Those who attended the workshop would have a better chance of passing than those who did not. Why? It is simply because the participants know exactly what the examiners expect them to do and they know their area of weaknesses. What’s more, if they fall a little short during the grading, they may still be able to make it.

Nevertheless, they were reminded not to depend on ‘charity’ and encouraged to work on improving themselves so that they could pass on their own merits.

Participants in the course may collect their certificates from the Secretariat from 16 February 2009.

Grading Reminders

0

Coaches are requested to note that full-contact sparring between candidates is not a requirement for grading.

If it is required the Singapore Taekwondo Federation (STF) will make it compulsory for candidates to wear full protective equipment. There is no reason why only groin guard is compulsory for male and optional for female when the STF is committed to ensure the safety of all participants in the grading.

Candidates and sparring assistants are strictly prohibited from engaging in full-contact sparring. Only light or slight contact is allowed.

For the candidates to earn the thumbs-up from the examiners, they have to display adequate sparring techniques and tactics. The expectations from the examiners will be progressively more the higher the grades.

For example, a green belt may pass his sparring test by displaying only one technique during the grading. But it will not see a red belt through in his grading. He is expected to show at least three different techniques and employ two tactical moves. The examiners want to see different types of kicks. Candidates may use straight punches as one of the techniques.

The STF encourages coaches to arrange sparring partners for their candidates. The primary purpose of allowing this arrangement is to give the candidates an ideal condition to showcase their skills.

Candidates should be reminded that the examiners will not hesitate to fail them if they are not serious about the sparring. The examiners will not caution them. They will just fail the candidates if they play the fool.

NCAP (Level 1) Final Results

The retest for NCAP (Level 1) was completed on Saturday 31 January 2009 at the National Training Centre.

8 candidates who had to resubmit their lesson plans did so. Their new lesson plans were accepted as they were more thorough and provided key information which would help them in the delivery of their lessons.

15 and 6 candidates took their theory and practical tests again. All of them did well to pass.

The complete results for the course are attached.

Fun at the National Training Centre

More than 100 members and their families and friends of taekwondo gathered at the National Training Centre on 30 January 2009 to celebrate the Chinese New Year.  Here are some photographs taken at the event.  Enjoy!

Conversion from Poom to Dan

0

Members holding 1st poom may apply for their grade to be converted to 1st dan on reaching the age of 15, 2nd dan one year after they obtained their 1st dan and 3rd dan two years after they receive their 2nd dan. They are encouraged to do so when the conversion is due as the next grade will be granted only when the time frame is met – for example, if a poom belt holder coverts his grade when he is 20 years old, he can only take his grading or convert his next grade when is 21.

Coaches should remind their poom belt holders that the conversion is not automatic.

Poom belt holders have to continue training to qualify for conversion. If they stop training after obtaining their grade, they will have to re-join the club and train at least six months before they can apply for conversion.

The six-month training requirement is for the coaches to assess the suitability of their poom belt holders for the conversion. If the coaches are not satisfied, they have the right to prescribe a longer training period for their trainees before endorsing the applications for conversion.

Coaches should not support conversion applications from poom belt holders who obtain their grades under another club unless clearance has been given by the club or the Singapore Taekwondo Federation.

Coaches must make sure that all poom belt holders and their parents are aware of the conversion guidelines.

18 coaches took their final tests on Sunday 18 January 2009 at the National Training Centre. For their tests they had to give a 15-minute presentation each on one technical topic of their choice.

The coaches had to do some research as they were expected to cover the subject in depth. At the same time, they were required to make sure that their explanation was clear and concise. It was a challenge but they took it in their stride.

16 coaches chose to present their subject with the aid of powerpoint and video clips while two of them did it with the help of an assistant demonstrator.

All in all the examiners, Mr Steven Soh and Mr Lim Teong Chin, were satisfied that most of them had put in a lot of energy, thought and research to their respective topics. Both examiners believed that the coaches had learnt a lot more from their research.

The examiners were satisfied that the following met the requirements of the course.
